چکیده
Introduction Occultation methods based on effects connected with the refraction of electromagnetic waves in both the optical and radiofrequency domains have been used by astronomers for numerous investigations of planetary atmospheres over the last decades. The first experiment started with the Mars flyby by Mariner-IV in 1964. Since this first attempt, radio-occultation experiments have been carried by the majority of planetary missions. Measurement principle The GPS constellation consists of 24 satellites distributed in six orbital planes around the globe. Each satellite orbit is circular with an inclination of 55 deg, a period of 12 h and an altitude of 20 200 km. A schematic of atmospheric profiling by GPS radio occultation is shown in Figure 1. For the receiver, an occultation occurs whenever a GPS satellite rises or sets and the ray path from its transmitter traverses the Earth’s atmospheric limb. With 24 GPS satellites, a single GPS receiver in a near polar orbit at 824 km will observe over 500 occultations per day, distributed fairly uniformly about the globe (Fig. 2).

Application of GPS radio occultation to the assessment of temperature profile retrievals from microwave and infrared sounders
Comparisons of satellite temperature profile products from GPS radio occultation (RO) and hyperspectral infrared (IR)/microwave (MW) sounders are made using a previously developed matchup technique. The profile matchup technique matches GPS RO and IR/MW sounder profiles temporally, within 1 h, and spatially, taking into account the unique RO profile geometry and theoretical spatial resolution b...
متن کاملAn Active Microwave Limb Sounder for Profiling Water Vapor, Ozone, Temperature, Geopotential of Pressure Surfaces and Clouds
We present and characterize the performance of a new remote sensing concept extrapolated from the GPS occultation concept in which we choose the signal frequencies to determine profiles of atmospheric water, ozone, temperature, geopotential of atmospheric pressure surfaces and clouds.

Integrated Precipitable Water (IPW) vapor estimates derived from a network of ground-based GPS receivers provide an accurate, convenient, and statistically robust means to assess the quality of AIRS water vapor retrievals over the contiguous United States (CONUS). For a period from April to October 2004, GPS IPW estimates were paired with AIRS data nearly coincident in time and space. The match...

Hyper-spectral Atmospheric Infrared Sounder has many channels. Although, it has been carried out channel selection in the actual application process, but compared with the previous detector, the channel also seems more and thus easy to weak correlation between channels, which is not obey classical variational assimilation theory requires observation error is not related. Hyper-spectral sounder ...
متن کاملEffects of GPS/RO refractivities on IR/MW retrievals
The ability of Global Positioning System Radio Occultation (GPS/RO) to improve tropospheric profile retrievals was examined. Retrievals were performed using IR and MW radiometric measurements from the ATOVS (Advanced TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder) on current NOAA polar orbiting satellites and simulated high spectral resolution infrared measurements from the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (Cr...
